The Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) recognizes this, and as a result, is upgrading over 200 of its traffic intersection monitoring systems. Numerous components go into making a traffic light function properly – cameras, priority preemption systems, battery backups, memory management units (MMU’s), traffic controllers, stop arm detection, and in-ground sensors. All of these devices must be able to efficiently communicate in order to fulfill their purpose.
IDOT turned to Comtrol to enable this communication. Comtrol’s solution was the RocketLinx ES8510-XT. The ES8510-XT industrial Ethernet switch allows users to optimize the RocketLinx’s settings for any application in order to achieve maximum efficiency. The ES8510-XT provides reliable communication between all devices involved in traffic control, while also relaying data to the traffic management system via Single-Mode fiber optics.
The ES8510-XT is NEMA TS2 certified to operate in extreme conditions. IDOT required this certification to ensure the switches will continue to operate during harsh winters – in which the switch may even become inaccessible. The NEMA TS2 certification guarantees switch function in a wide temperature range of -40°C to 74°C, while the management features built in to the ES8510-XT allow for remote configuration and troubleshooting. In addition, the ES8510-XT is protected by IP31 grade aluminum housing, providing excellent heat dispersion and protection against dust and water damage – making it perfectly designed for any traffic control environment.
