PortVision ® DX

PortVisionDXapp                 PortVisionDXug

PortVision ® DX is Comtrol Corporation’s management software included with all DeviceMaster, IO-Link Master, and managed RocketLinx switch products. This free software allows you to configure network settings, upload firmware, manage, and monitor Comtrol Ethernet-attached devices within one application. PortVision DX detects Comtrol Ethernet-attached devices, eliminating the complicated patchwork of separate drivers, web interfaces and proprietary software typically needed to deploy a network of industrial communication devices.

In addition to identifying Comtrol Ethernet-attached products, PortVision DX can also graphically display any unmanaged Comtrol or third-party devices or hardware. All non-Comtrol products and unmanaged RocketLinx devices are treated as non-intelligent devices. Their inclusion enables network administrators to diagram a complete network topology, but they otherwise have limited feature support.

Features

Using PortVision DX

Locating Devices

After installing PortVision DX, simply click the Scan button to locate one or multiple Comtrol Ethernet-attached products.

PortVision DX locates the selected products on the local network and automatically loads the device name, model, IP address, MAC address, software version and status. You can then easily access, organize and configure your devices.

Organizing Devices

You can organize your devices to fit your environment by creating folders and moving the appropriate devices into the folder.

Each folder indicates the number of devices and how many are online, allowing you to do a quick status check without having to open each device page. You can also create and save multiple sessions to build the best views for different users or applications.

Configuring IP Addresses

To configure a device’s IP address, simply highlight it and click the Properties button. The Properties-General page for that product appears so that you can configure the IP address as well as other network settings and basic configurations.

Web Interface

You can easily access the web interface by clicking theWeb Interface tab on the device’s property page or by selecting Web Page after right-clicking on the device on the Main page. The web interface is helpful if you are not familiar with the software parameters of your device. Accessing the web interface allows you to do the following:

  • DeviceMaster PRO/RTS/Serial Hub/500: Configure socket mode or serial tunneling (SocketServer or NS-Link, depending on whether you have installed the NS-Link device driver). COM port configuration is done using the Comtrol Drivers Management Console, which is installed when you install the NS-Link driver.
  • IO-Link Master: Configure the IO-Link Master, including the IO-Link, EtherNet/IP™, and Modbus/TCP protocols.
  • RocketLinx: Configure your RocketLinx managed industrial switch. Optionally, you can use the Command Line Interface (CLI).

Software Settings

To quickly view or update a device’s software setting, you can use the Software Settings tab on the device properties page (DeviceMaster and IO-Link Master). If you know all the device software parameters, this tab allows you to quickly:

  • Create or load configuration files for one or multiple devices
  • Modify the device configuration

Telnet/SSH Access

Telnet/SSH access is available for DeviceMaster and RocketLinx devices. It provides you with a quick and easy way to diagnose technical issues through the Command Line Interface. IO-Link Master diagnostics information is included on the web interface.

Applications

PortVision DX provides access to several useful tools and applications. You can add shortcuts to applications that you frequently use to manage your devices using the Customize option. By default, PortVision DX provides links to:

  • Test Terminal (WCom2)
  • Port Monitor (PMon2)

Test Terminal (WCOM2) Serial Port Test Software

Test Terminal is used to troubleshoot communications on a port-by-port basis. It enables you to open a serial port, send characters and commands to the port, and toggle the control signals, It may be used with a loopback plug on a port to test serial ports and verify port operation by allowing you to send data out the port on the transmit side, loop the data back to the receive side, and view the received data on the screen.

If you have a peripheral device connected to the serial port and know the device’s command set, you can also send commands to the device. For example, if you have a modem connected to the port, you can use AT commands to query the modem and dial out to the host system.

Port Monitor (PMON2) Serial Port Monitoring Software

Port Monitor offers a summary of all Comtrol device statistics in one view to verify a device’s operation and status. The statistics are displayed in a spreadsheet model: each COM port is a horizontal row, and each vertical column displays a variable or value for the respective COM port for simplified port monitoring and superior ease of use.

Port Monitor can also produce statistics and reports that can help you verify the operation of the COM ports and connected peripherals. Some immediate feedback includes:

  • The state of the modem control and status signals
  • Open ports
  • Raw byte input and output counts obtained from the device driver
  • Port errors
  • Instantaneous characters per second (CPS) calculations
  • Minute, hour, and day CPS averages and peaks
  • Carrier detect (CD) signal runtime and transition count

Reports can be automatically generated on an hourly and/or daily basis, and can cover all ports collectively or a separate report for each port may be generated. You can also set how often the values are recalculated, fine-tune the thoroughness against system efficiency, and automatically run external batch files to perform additional processing and analysis.

Documentation

You can easily locate and download the latest documentation for your product using the Documentationmenu on the Properties pages or from the Main page. Simply select the Product Category, choose the document that you want to download and click the Download the latest edition from the web button.

Configuration Files

PortVision DX supports saving and loading configuration files for the ComtrolEthernet-attached device web configuration settings. You can save or load some or all web page configuration settings.

Tracker

PortVision DX provides the Tracker option for the IO-Link Master and RocketLinx families so you can remotely toggle the device LEDs on and off to easily locate a specific device in a rack or cabinet.

PortVision DX Migration

PortVision DX provides the Import option to import existing PortVision DX sessions to make the migration to PortVision DX a snap.
