History of Innovation

Comtrol invented the first multi-port serial controller card for the PC and has consistently been first to market with many other high-performance connectivity products that have been widely adopted by the data communications industry.

Today, Comtrol remains dedicated to its innovative mission. As a product expert in serial connectivity technologies and specialized application systems, Comtrol products are widely used to connect and control peripheral serial devices – within embedded systems, to local servers, and across the enterprise.

Applications of the technology include connecting retail point-of-sale devices, remote LAN access, Internet/intranet access, ATMs and other informational and transaction kiosks, process control and manufacturing automation devices on the factory floor, security systems, transportation/traffic monitoring and control systems, and a wide variety of other industrial automation applications.

Comtrol Landmarks

1982: Comtrol pioneered enterprise systems integration through its data communications technologies and later with its programmable thin servers.

1993: Launched RocketPort serial concentrator which uses a Comtrol-developed a Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC) processor to minimize Central Processing Unit (CPU) overhead and maximize ease-of-use and application software compatibility. RocketPort established a new price and performance benchmark in the industry.

1997: Developed the RocketModem – industry’s first multiple-modem card for  PCs – that used on-board processing.

I999: Acquisition of Protocol Technologies Inc., which provided serial data communications products to hotels and motels.

2000: Comtrol introduced the DeviceMaster family of programmable, network-attached device and application servers that enable "anytime, anywhere" device access through the Internet. DeviceMaster servers reduce support costs, enable more efficient management, and ultimately protect profits.
